On April 8th, the city of Show Low presented Diamond in the Rough, a Neil Diamond tribute band out of Phoenix, which packed the Show Low School District auditorium with enthusiastic fans who weren’t afraid to sing (and dance at times) along. Diamond in the Rough has become well known throughout Arizona for bringing the look and sound of Neil Diamond to the stage. The group has also performed nationally and internationally in Europe, Central America, and the Caribbean. The band has played resorts, casinos, cruise ships, and corporate events.
Before the show, I had the pleasure of chatting with native Arizonan, Greg Ansel (also known as Greg Diamond), about how he came to find his passion in performing Neil Diamond’s hits. “We started about three years ago and were mostly a Journey cover band until we lost our Journey singer. We were trying to figure out what to do when I thought of my mom who loved Neil Diamond. She suggested we do a Neil Diamond show so we did and people loved it,” said Greg smiling. “His music is really popular with the 50+ demographic and many of their kids, like me, who grew up listening to him.”
