Springtime is my favorite time of year to fish. The cool thing is the White Mountain Bass Club fires back up. Since 1987, the White Mountain Bass Club has been fishing bass tournaments on our local White Mountains lakes. A fun get together for bass anglers that like to keep fishing up here when the weather is beautiful and it is too hot down below. I have always said that if you would like to ever become a professional bass angler, it is important to start small with your local bass club. I still enjoy fishing with them when I can, and I love to see new anglers every year. High schools are also now getting involved with bass-fishing tournaments. A small club is a great way to learn how tournaments work and even learn new techniques.
With spring here, now is the time to go shallow for those bass. I like to throw jigs, spinnerbaits, and jerkbaits. The lakes the bass club like to hit are Rainbow Lake, Show Low Lake, Fools Hollow Lake, and Willow Springs. Remember: when the bass are spawning, it is very important to catch and release as we need to help keep those bass around for everyone to catch in the future. For more info on the White Mountain Bass Club you can log onto the web at www.wmbass.com. You are always welcome to even come and check out the weigh-ins and see what is coming out of our lakes.
Topwater will be coming really soon and my favorite topwater bait for our lakes is a Rico. All new Fishing with Johnny Johnson shows have started on Fox Sports AZ and you just might see a few local lakes on television this year. Be sure to check your local listings for times. Also be sure to enter the Hatch Toyota Tundra Fishing Derby with prizes for the kids at Fools Hollow Lake. For date and time, call Hatch Toyota.
TIP OF THE MONTH: Remember if the fish are not eating worms and jigs, try reaction baits (spinnerbaits, crankbaits, jerkbaits, etc.)
