Northeastern Arizona Launches Geocaching Tourism Event

Northeastern Arizona is a recreational gold mine. Fishing, hunting, off-roading, skiing, tubing, sledding, camping, and geocaching are plentiful throughout OUR Arizona.

What is Our Arizona?

Arizona is known for its desert climate, cactus, hot summers, and mild winters, but there’s a hidden treasure of a historical mountainous wonderland stretching from Winslow to the north, Pinetop-Lakeside to the south, and Eagar/Springerville to the east. That’s OUR Arizona, a unique contradiction to the desert, cactus, and heat most of us envision.

The Route 66 White Mountain GeoTour is a geocaching tourism initiative to introduce desert dwellers, geocachers, and tourists to our Arizona: Eagar, Pinetop-Lakeside, Show Low, Snowflake, Springerville, St. Johns, Taylor, Winslow, and Navajo county. Whether it’s local Arizonans looking for a staycation, or out-of-towners, we’ve got something for everyone.

Escape the heat of the summer, come see the aspens and oaks change colors, or enjoy skiing and zip-lining at Sunrise Ski Resort. Four seasons stretch across hundreds of miles, two counties, and eight cities.

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is a free real-world, outdoor treasure hunt. Players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using a smartphone or GPS and can then share their experiences online.

What is a GeoTour?

GeoTours are a series of geocaches tied together by a common theme, such as the history, recreational activities, or points of interest of a given area or region. There is no fixed itinerary, as there would be on a traditional trail, but rather a series of points of interest in a self-guided, goal-oriented plan.

What is the Route 66 GeoTour Passport?

The Official Route 66 White Mountain GeoTour Passport functions as a logbook for you to track your progress as you hunt specially placed geocaches along the tour. This passport lets you record special codes from the geocaches you find in order to qualify for the Route 66 White Mountain GeoTour Special Edition GeoCoin. Earn extra cache dash points if you stay at our participating sponsor hotels or motels or eat at our participating restaurants.

What is a GeoCoin?

The Route 66 White Mountain GeoTour GeoCoin is a specially designed coin to reward cachers who complete our GeoTour Passport by collecting points as they find specific geocaches and by dining and lodging with our sponsors. Each GeoCoin is trackable on

What is the Route 66 White Mountain GeoTour Event Series & Grand Finale?

The event series and grand finale are specially created to keep cachers returning to OUR Arizona throughout the year.

Come join our exciting adventure and see why it can be YOUR destination hot spot.
