Even though it is almost unbearable in the winter to be out on these local waters, this can be the time to catch the biggest trout. Trout love the colder water and feed a lot better this time of year. So bundle up and get your tackle ready.
This time of year is a great time for spoon fishing. Grab a light fishing rod, and 6-pound test flourocarbon line, and some phoebe, or kastmaster spoons in gold or silver and blue colors. My favorite sizes are 1/8 oz and 1/4 oz. Spoons cast great and when you reel them back to you be sure to slow roll the bait. Also one big tip is to use a swivel when throwing these baits as they tend to twist your line.
One other thing is to remember this time of year is to get out to Show Low Lake for those big Walleye. One big lure like a swimbait or jerkbait can catch that potential state record this time of year. If it is bass you’re after, you can now start hitting the lower lakes and spoon bite will be kicking in great. I like Strata spoons in 1/2 oz to start with. I like silver and sometimes white colors for a little dingy water.
