The White Mountain Gem and Mineral Club held their 21st Show on July 7-8 at the Hon-Dah Resort. There was a record high guest attendance this year! The Show featured 21 vendors from Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and California; offering rock, mineral, gem and fossil specimens as well as exhibits, handmade jewelry, gourd art, lapidary tools and equipment, and much more.
The kids sure had a great time! In the Children’s Activity Room, 118 young rock hounds assembled their first “Rock Collections” in egg cartons, chosen from many available sample minerals and their identifying labels. They also got to hand paint on small slabs of sandstone, make rubbings of dinosaur metal plaques, and hunt for toy dinosaurs in a sand box wagon. Education and fun go well together!
The White Mountain Dinosaur Exploration Center from Springerville featured 3D printed dinosaur skulls and a video of their current dig in New Mexico. They also gave out shark teeth and amber to the children that stopped by to see Terrie, the juvenile Tyrannosaur, a walking, toothy, full size puppet.
The White Mountain Gold Prospectors were on hand to demonstrate gold panning and finishing to children and adults. They had a crowd around their exhibition all day, with lively discussions and stories.
There were silent auctions for rock and mineral specimens and a raffle every hour for many different types of great prizes.
We hope you’ll attend and have a wonderful time at their 22nd Show, which will be scheduled next summer!
