Times sure have changed since the days of naugahyde leather. Now, we have a vast availability of fabrics, leathers and hybrid leather-fabric blends. But with all of these options, which is the right choice for you and your space? Maybe you have a home with several children, maybe you and your husband are empty nesters with a small pooch, or maybe you are just starting out with your first home. Luckily, all of these scenarios can be covered with the perfect material!
There are many different types of leather, and a lot of knowledge to be learned about leather. The highest quality of leather is actually the hardest to take care of (and the most expensive…go figure!) Higher quality leather will have a higher “breathability” factor, but will also be prone to staining and scratching. As leather becomes less expensive, it becomes easier to care for and waterproof, but you lose the breathability and you will experience the “hot” and “cold” sofa sensation. This leather is similar to your car leather for example.
Whether it is a print or a solid, you will find many different fibers in fabrics today–some more forgiving than others, and each with their own specific duties. Polyester (found it today’s microfiber or micro suede products) is easily cleaned (with usually a water cleaning code) and also durable. Cotton, while can be dyed to beautiful colors to create amazing patterns, can stretch and become loose over time. Rayon, another man-made fiber like microfiber, is also easily cleanable as well as durable, but will not have quite the same soft hand as polyester.
These are fairly new to the industry, and have become quite popular due to their look as well as their price. They are a spin-off of leather, although not claiming to actually be “leather”. These blended products have a combination of leather, polyurethane, and polyester. This trifecta of strong elements creates a durable, cleanable, scratch proof cover great for children and pets. Not to mention it can be half the price of high end leather, it’s a great option for growing families!
The options truly are endless—but if you are still unsure about the perfect cover for your lifestyle, come in and let us help you find what works best for you!
