It’s the middle of January and I bet you are not the picture of health and wellness you may have intended to be. If you are, keep it up. Write a book. For the rest of us, that vision of discipline and better living may be becoming ever more obscured by a veil of work, circumstances and just life as we know it. If your resolution had anything to do with finding the time to improve your health, fitness and self image, there is no better time than the present to seek some help and support in this arena.
“Keeping a New Years resolution to get fit is definitely a commitment and it can be frustrating. It can be overwhelming when you start and don’t know what to do where. Maybe you are putting the time in, but you’re not seeing results. A few little tweaks of your routine from a trainer in a comfortable environment can really make the difference,” notes Lena Hall of Longevity Fitness Center in Taylor.
As a personal trainer and owner of a 24/7 full service fitness facility, Lena knows the importance of a supportive environment when it comes to making your fitness goals a lifestyle. “It is a small town and our members are definitely a family for us. We really care about our members and go above and beyond to take good care of them. We have been here so long that we know our members. We’ve seen many overcome traumatic experiences like open heart surgery and through hard work, they build themselves back up and it is wonderful to see,” she says, “Although our members come in at all hours of the day and night, we like to get to know them so we can take the best care of them. For our new one year memberships, we include a personal training session where we customize a plan for you. We talk about nutrition, personal goals, and create a plan so our members can achieve their health goals. It is important that members get comfortable with the facility and what it offers. This is a lifestyle, not a one month hobby. The benefits and results are something you want to enjoy long term.”
Opened in 2008 as a physical therapy office, Lena and her husband Jordan took over the facility in 2011 when it became a full service gym with 24 hour card access. “We have everything from circuit training to free weights and every cardiovascular machine you could want. We are constantly upgrading our equipment and just recently added a new treadmill. We have flat screen televisions and Sirius radio is available throughout so people can listen to their choice of music. Being a 24/7 facility is nice because there is rarely any congestion and our members generally have the place to themselves if they choose,” smiles Lena, “We also offer personal training sessions, booty camp classes, and low impact aerobics classes. We offer classes for every age. I offer 30 minute ladies classes twice a week in Show Low at CellularOne. The class is available to all CellOne employees, but you don’t have to be a CellOne employee to take the class.”
In addition to the selection and quality of equipment, Lena and Jordan pride themselves on an immaculate state of cleanliness and comfort in their fitness center. “We are super particular about the way we keep things clean here. Some gyms (especially card locked facilities) don’t concentrate on that enough as far as we are concerned. Cleanliness is a big thing for us. You can’t be having people get sick and we have never had a single complaint,” says Jordan, “The heating and cooling here is meticulously maintained. We make sure it is comfortable in here. The facility has 24 hour security and we answer our phones around the clock. We also take our member suggestions very seriously and have a box available for members to submit any problems or suggestions they have. We improve and expand the facility based on those comment cards.”
Longevity Fitness Center’s most recent additions include a High Powered Orbit Tanning Bed (12-minute tan compared to 20 plus minutes) and a state of the art infrared sauna. “It is great for detoxification. In a traditional sauna, the humidity only heats up the surface of your skin.
The infrared sauna heats up your core so you sweat out more toxins. The technology is fairly new and we are the only facility in the White Mountains to offer it. Infrared rays have been found to improve blood circulation, stimulate endorphins, lower lactic acid, kill certain bacteria and parasites and burn calories. The list of conditions that can benefit from infrared sauna time is long and includes arthritis, fibromyalgia, skin conditions, cellulite, injuries and chronic pain. It is popular among law enforcement, firemen, hospital personnel, mechanics and others who work with chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides. The sauna is more than just relaxing, it can be of great health benefit in pushing out the toxins we all come in contact with,” says Lena, “The infrared sauna is $4 a session. It can hold up to four people comfortably. It is by appointment, but appointments can be made anytime 24/7. ”
Given the quality, care and amenities at Longevity Fitness Center, I was surprised by the affordability of membership. It literally costs less than a family trip through a fast food drive thru once a month. That is a month’s worth of gym membership for less than a bucket of chicken. Wow. Now there is some perspective. “Our most inexpensive rate is $20 a month (when you pay for the year). There is a one time $10 fee for your 24 hour access card. When you sign up for a year, you receive a free personal training session, some free sessions in the tanning bed or sauna and discounts throughout the year. We also offer plans for 6 months, 3 months, 1 month, 1 week and even a day pass.
We have a friend referral program where if you refer a friend to be a contracted member, you as a contracted member, get a free month of membership. We honor both the Silver Sneakers and Silver And Fit programs. We do Silver Sneakers classes here twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays. The classes are for 55 and older and they are super low impact and great for beginners. We also offer minor memberships for kids 14 and up. Our staff hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 am to 5 pm, but we are always available by phone for our members and sign ups,” says Lena.
To which Jordan adds, “We don’t up our prices from year to year. Our costs have gone up, but we have been able to keep our prices consistent. Our economy has seen hard times and we want to offer our members the very best value we can. We also accept Silver Sneakers and other insurance programs that pay for your membership. We offer corporate discounts to organizations like the hospital and Navajo County as well as to teachers, law enforcement and firemen.” Members also enjoy discounts on tree removal, green waste, yard work and handyman services with Jordan’s company Dirty Deeds.
So, whether your New Year’s resolution was to clean up your act or maybe just your yard, it is nice to know that there is help available to make it as easy and affordable as possible.
